The Rebuild

The Rebuild after the Fire

In 2014 a fire tore through the Pub, destroying the historic building. In 2020, led by Mick Lodge, along with many members of the community and many other helpers, pub rebuild process started - read the journey of the rebuild below.

About the Conargo Pub
1. Initial Survey - Aug 2020

After spending several solid hours across several days working on the design of the pub in 2020, Michael, Charlie and Bob and Paul (and their partners) agreed a basic design for the Pub which had to incorporate the surviving wall, doors and windows along the front of the building. As the façade of the building (as burnt and broken as it was) had been put under a Local Heritage Listing by the Council, the rebuild had to retain the front of the building in any new building works. This was a challenging proposition as the wall was unsupported and there was also an issue with rising damp affecting the mortar in the brickwork along the front. The parapet section of the front wall was also damaged as the side walls of the pub had been demolished as part of the fire clean up previously. Noel Burton, Detail Survey, Bungendore, Michael’s long time surveyor friend, came over from Canberra to assist Michael with the set out for the building over a number of days.

The next job on the site was to fill in and compact the hole where the old cellar had been so that the slab could be prepared and poured. The slab prep involved Michael removing all the top layer of dirt and fire debris etc from the whole building area so that suitable material could be placed and compacted in the building footprint area. We are very grateful to Robyn Sefton from Boonoke for allowing us to use material from the Black Sandhill quarry and to Trevor Hussey from Conargo and his mate Doug for all their work in loading and carting the sand to the Hotel. Thanks also go to Trevor’s wife, Eve, for the numerous morning teas that she cooked and brought to the job site for Mick and those that were working there. This work involved 1,200m3 of fill material, utilised Michael’s long years of Earthmoving and Surveying experience and all the heavy machinery which he brought down from Northern NSW to use for this project.

In order to set up and pour the slab for the building, the engineer for the job, Adam Walker from ACE Engineering, Williamtown , NSW designed an 800mm deep footing to be dug under the front wall so that the slab could support and run up to that footing. Additionally, 6 metre steel H beams were used to vertically support the previously existing brickwork – 2m below and 4m above ground. The quality welding work for the H beams was carried out by Chris Hallowell from Deniliquin . Plumbers Alan Hardcastle from Conargo and Tony Danckert from Deniliquin had laid and backfilled all the under-slab plumbing and by mid-June, 2021 the slab preparation was finished and Jake Stevens from Stevens Contracting, Echuca/Moama and his crew poured the slab. It was a memorable day, both for the excellent organisation of the slab pour and quality of the finishing works, but also as a sign that the pub rebuild was making headway.

With the slab finished, cured and stripped, the bricklayer Tony Moynihan from Deniliquin was able to start his huge task. As each wall was cavity brick (2 courses) except for the front wall which was 3 courses thick (to incorporated the façade as we were obligated to do), there were many, many days of work for Tony. The cavity brick walls all contain insulation batts, as do the ceilings. Tony did most of the bricklaying by himself and was on site solidly for about 5 months.

The carpentry crew was led by Harry Croxford from Kyabram and Mick Croxford from Nathalia . Their work involved (but was not limited to) full construction of the bar, fitting windows and doors, internal framing works for walls, building in cupboards and framing the roof. There was also a million of those little jobs that the builders remember doing, but that go unnoticed after the build is completed. (Sorry, Harry.)

With the roof framing in place, the electrical crew, TA Maher Electrical from Deniliquin , could start the cabling works for lights, fans, power points, air-conditioning, audio-visual gear and the cold rooms. They additionally installed 2 separate power boards one for the kitchen and one for the bar which has made it easy to isolate a problem power point or switch without losing all the power.

Once the electrical crew were finished, the roofer Billy Danckert and crew from Deniliquin , started putting the Colourbond sheets on. This in itself was a big job, not only due to the size of the roof, but as the valleys and guttering were designed to catch as much rain as possible for re-use by the pub, there were a few more challenges for the roofing crew. The finished roofing job is a credit to them.

While the roofing was ongoing the Plasterers, Chris Sartore and crew from Deniliquin were sheeting and finishing the ceilings and walls of the Pub. The plasterers did a great job, leaving the walls and ceilings ready for painting.

The cold rooms were also being installed at this time. Coolroom Carpenters at Cobram supplied and installed the cold rooms (1 in the Kitchen and 1 in the Bar) with Jason Nye from Cobram doing the refrigeration side of the cold rooms and the air-conditioning throughout the Pub. With a new Andale glycol system replacing the old-style temp-rite system for beer cooling, the air conditioning working beautifully and both the new cold rooms in use, we’ve had no complaints about the patrons, the beer (or the salads) being hot.

7. Early Works filling Pub old Cellar - Feb 2021

The interior painting was all done by Harry Dickings and by Michael . Harry had come down from Northern NSW to work as a labourer with Mick, to help some of the tradies and to get an idea about potentially becoming an apprentice in one or other of the trades when he went back home. Harry has since started a plumbing apprenticeship and is enjoying using skills that he developed working with Mick in that role.

Burt Banks from Mathoura was one of the finishing tradespeople for the rebuild. Burt was our renderer / white wash person, responsible for the exterior wall finish. The process was interesting to watch with chicken wire used underneath for stability of the finish. The white wash finish on the building was the same style finish as Michael remembered from his days living there and looks great.

9. Works to fill and level the block - Feb 2021

The floor coverings were supplied and laid by Rochelle and Darren Sharp, Flooring Xtra, Finley. Darren, one of the owners, was amazing, working long hours into the night to finish laying the vinyl floors and the carpets, and to finish the work just before we opened. He largely did all the laying work on his own and it is a credit to him.

The tradespeople referenced above were those that spent the most time on site. There were other tradies and suppliers who also were involved in the works – from the insulation crew, to the gas suppliers to the kitchen equipment suppliers, thank you all.

Michael's Reflections

Michael's reflections on the rebuild of the Pub

Having lived at the Conargo Pub from the age of 4, coming through Conargo in 2020 the remains of the pub were a sad sight. I had heard that the pub had burnt down in 2014 but to walk through the remains of the building really hit home. I walked through the burnt-out remains and thought about my childhood in the Pub and family's history with the Pub and the whole Conargo District. Memories of my mother, father, brother and sisters, both the funny stories and the sad stories, the patrons - both the friends and those passing through, the B & S and Burr-cutters Balls – these were the memories that struck me as I walked around the remains of the Pub. I spoke to Charlie and Bob White who owned the block that the Pub was on and to my brother, Paul regarding re-building the Pub and formed a Unit Trust for the purpose.

I freighted some of my Earthmoving machinery from the farm and commenced cleaning up the site so that my good mate Noel could survey the block in October 2020. I worked through until May 2021 before heading home for some R & R. After returning in August 2021, I continued the building works for another 12 months and opened the Pub the weekend before the Ute Muster 2022.

Conargo Pub Remains Rebuilding Process
Construction Site Restored Pub

Upon reflection, I probably under-estimated the task that I was taking on (and probably should have listened to my wife who thought that I was crazy) but looking at the Pub now, I'm sure that my mother and my old man would feel proud of what I have built as a lasting memorial to our family's time at the Conargo Pub.

Special Thanks

All of the tradies that I had on site were great, but a special mention goes to Alan the Plumber, Harry Croxford the builder and Tony the Brickie who were invaluable to me during the course of the works. Thank you all.
